Every founder I talk to has the same story. They opened ChatGPT, asked for a marketing strategy, and got back something that reads like a 2019 HubSpot blog post wearing a Web3 costume. "Build community. Leverage social proof. Create compelling content." Thanks. Revolutionary.
The problem isn't that AI is bad at language. It's that AI is bad at knowing things worth saying.

The Training Data Problem
Generic marketing AI learns from the internet. The internet is mostly mediocre marketing advice written by people who've never launched anything, repackaged by SEO farms optimizing for clicks. So when you ask for strategy, you get the median of all published marketing thought. And the median is terrible.
Think about what's actually in that training data. Blog posts from agencies selling retainers. LinkedIn threads from people who managed one campaign in 2017. Course landing pages. Recycled frameworks nobody pressure-tested against real numbers.
You're getting strategy from a machine that learned marketing the way someone learns surgery by reading WebMD.
Strategy Requires Scars
Real marketing strategy comes from watching things fail. It comes from the founder who burned $40K on KOL campaigns and got 200 wallets that churned in a week. From the team that spent three months building a Discord community before realizing their actual users lived on Farcaster. From the operator who learned that "build in public" only compounds if you do it every single week, not when you feel inspired.
The projects that actually grow at the grant stage, for instance, don't succeed because they found some brilliant campaign idea. They succeed because they built repeatable visibility habits. Weekly build updates. Ecosystem engagement. Surfacing credibility signals like grants, partnerships, and accelerator participation over and over until the market finally pays attention. When the budget is near zero, you build habits, not campaigns. No generic AI is going to tell you that, because it's an insight born from operating at the edge of survival, not from indexing blog posts.
The "Audience as Hero" Test
Most AI-generated strategy puts the company at the center. "Here's how to tell YOUR story. Here's how to position YOUR product." But the frameworks that actually convert in Web3 flip this entirely. The audience becomes the hero. Your product is the tool they wield.
Good strategy asks: what belief system are you building? Can your grandmother understand and care about what you're doing? If not, neither will your users. The projects that work in crypto don't just solve problems. They create belief. They become movements. A language model trained on marketing copy can't distinguish between "content that describes features" and "narrative that transmits conviction," because it has never felt conviction about anything.
Where AI Actually Breaks Down
There are three specific failure modes I see constantly.
It can't sequence. AI will hand you ten tactics with no sense of order. But order is everything. You don't touch Twitter before you've proven traction on Warpcast if you're building on Base. You don't run paid acquisition before you have a retention loop. Sequencing is strategy. Tactics are just a shopping list.
It can't say no. Real strategy is mostly about what you don't do. A good strategist looks at a pre-launch project with no token and says "stop thinking about KOLs entirely." AI will always add more. More channels, more tactics, more ideas. It never kills anything because it has no sense of resource constraints or opportunity cost.
It can't read the room. Crypto Twitter can smell inauthenticity instantly. If your founder narrative sounds like it was consultant-ified, if your trauma story reads like PR copy, if your "build in public" updates feel rehearsed, the community will ignore you. Or worse, roast you. AI defaults to polished. Polished is death in this space.

The Lived Experience Gap
Here's what separates useful advice from noise. When someone who's actually driven 40,000 wallets through a pre-launch campaign tells you what worked, they're not giving you theory. They're giving you the messy, contingent, full-of-caveats truth. They know which Telegram groups actually convert. They know that 80% of projects at the grant stage blow their budget on tactics that feel productive but aren't. They know that consistent public progress and ecosystem participation create far more leverage than sporadic marketing pushes.
That knowledge doesn't exist in training data. It exists in operators' heads, in Discord DMs, in post-mortems that never got published. And it's stage-specific. What works for a pre-launch NFT project on Solana is wildly different from what works for a mature DeFi protocol on Ethereum. Generic AI treats all of these as the same problem. They aren't even the same sport.
So What Actually Works?
The answer isn't "AI bad, humans good." The answer is that AI is only as useful as the knowledge it's grounded in. If you train it on real operator playbooks, real campaign data, real failure post-mortems from people who've shipped 47 marketplace launches, it starts saying things that are actually worth hearing.
The difference between good and bad marketing AI is the same difference between a founder who reads about startups and a founder who's been through one. Both can use the vocabulary. Only one knows what the words actually mean.
